Celebrating its 45th anniversary, Vilnius University Kaunas Faculty of Humanities is the only faculty of Vilnius University located in another town. The faculty was established in 1964 as a setoff of humanities to Kaunas higher technical educational institutions which were prevailing at the time. In the beginning, the faculty was thought to concentrate on general studies, while studies of special subjects would be continued in the extramural department. Thus, the faculty was named Vilnius University Kaunas Faculty of General Sciences. Soon it appeared that it is more expedient to have studies of philology, library science, and economics developed in the faculty. Evening studies were chosen as the faculty did not have its own premises. In 1984, after a decade of restoration and repair, the faculty found its place on a cosy corner of Kaunas Old Town, near the faculty of Art Institute.
The faculty is located in two cosy quarters of Kaunas Old Town on the bank of the river Nemunas. Buildings of one more quarter have not been restored yet. Brick houses, which later formed the basis of the ensemble, were built in the beginning of the 16th -17th century.
